The Manifesto

What is a Grounded Leader?

It's the place I'm coming from when I share this work with you. A living document. Version three.

A living document

The Grounded Leader manifesto is a living document. It's the place I'm coming from when I share this work with you. It's subject to change.

Just like life. Live, learn, integrate, then live from the embodied wisdom as you repeat the process.

There is no endgame. No final horizon.

So the next time you read this, it may have changed. Because like you, I'm still in this work.

Who this is for

For the right people, this needs no explanation. You get it. You know.

For the people on the edge, you may need a little more. So I'm writing this for you too.

For the wrong people, I've already lost you. That doesn't make you wrong or me right. It just makes us not for each other at this moment in time.

If you're still here, let's keep going.

What grounded means

Grounded, to me, means that regardless of what's happening outside of me, I'm ok.

It means I know who I am. I know where what's happening outside me stops and what's happening inside me starts. And vice versa.

Katie Rydge, a Vision Quest mentor of mine, once put it like this: what is yours and what is theirs?

What is your body receiving of another's energy, and what is genuinely an internal button you're allowing the outside world to push?

If you've ever felt someone walk into a room, felt their energy before they spoke, you know the first one. That's theirs. It arrived with them and it will leave with them.

The second one is the work. Most of what knocks me sideways isn't theirs at all. It's mine, and it was already in me before they walked in. They just found it.

Knowing the difference is the whole thing. Once you can tell them apart, you stop managing the room and start standing in yourself.

Day three, first Quest

In 2024, day three of my first Vision Quest, I was sitting out in the Australian bush. I'd been busying myself with my quest space, carving a set of stairs into the hill to make it easier to walk in and out of my site.

Removing the top layer of soil, I disturbed an ant's nest.

I sat and watched them come out to meet this strange presence. After the initial ruckus, they went on about their day. They began fixing the hole, repairing the damage without a second thought. As if to say, what else would we do?

It didn't ultimately care about me. It cared about the safety and integrity of its home.

That's what being an ant is.

It didn't fight me for the sake of it. It didn't hold a grudge. It didn't keep banging on about it. It just got on with being an ant. Back to the work of what it was here to do.

So the question becomes: who are you here to be?

The spotted gum

I sat back and left them to it. My attention gravitated to a giant spotted gum, about ten metres outside my circle. Strong. Resolute. It knew exactly who it was.

And it never tried to be anything but a tree.

That's what grounded is to me. Knowing yourself so well that you'd never try to be something you're not. And only ever being who you are while honouring who others are, even when you're at polarity with another.

No performance. No trying. No need for outside acknowledgement.

You've spent time in the company of someone like this. You can feel it in them. They breathe slower. Shoulders soft. Eyes that stay with you, almost looking past the physical and into your soul.

Nothing to prove and nowhere to get to.

That's the ground.

What leader means

When I say leader, I'm not talking about a leader of people. I'm talking about a leader of self.

It means being honest about where you are, what you know, who you're being. It means honouring what's right for you and walking your own path, unapologetically and compassionately. Without needing to be right. Without making someone else wrong to feel okay about your own choices.

A leader of self acts from the heart. Speaks from the heart. Who you are is who you're being. Not what you're doing. Not the roles you're playing. Who you actually are, underneath all of it.

It's the choice you make internally and the action you take when no one's watching. That's where integrity is forged. That's where leadership is built.

Leading others is the by-product.

What it looks like

The by-product of becoming a Grounded Leader is that you're always certain of your next step. Even when you have no idea what comes next.

That's not a contradiction. It's the work.

You stop trying to avoid the reality of your situation. You look at the good and the bad as material. Everything in life is either a lesson or a sign that you're on track. There's no third option.

You feel your feelings. You acknowledge your shortcomings. You stop hiding your vulnerabilities, because hiding them is what kept you stuck and repeating your patterns in the first place.

You prioritise service above everything. And it starts closer in than most people expect. Service of self. Love of self. If saying “I love you” to yourself, out loud, has you wince a little, that's something worth sitting with.

You see the good in those around you. You ask what would love do. You come from kindness, which lets the people near you step into their own greatness and walk their own path. Or opt out. Both are fine.

You move through life with empty curiosity. Judgements fall away. The distinction between heart, soul and ego becomes clearer.

You're not perfect. You're not trying to be. You don't have all the answers. You do have many questions.

You don't always get it right, and you own your place in the world when you don't.

You stop trying to get somewhere you're not. You start creating yourself from where you're standing, and live the true version of you here in this moment.

You lead from self-responsibility. You let your being seed and grow in others by example. Not by manipulation. Not by force.

You create your life from who you're choosing to be, and let your doing be the by-product.

Who I'm being

These aren't goals. They aren't aspirations. They're what's underneath everything I do.

The declarations I stand on. The place I come from.

  • I am being the man my wife trusts completely.
  • I am being a powerful example for my boys of what it looks like to never abandon yourself for someone else.
  • I am being love in each moment.
  • I am being the work I'm building, a natural artistic expression for those who are called.
  • I am being the man who is true to himself regardless of size.
  • I am being enough, and still called to bring a soul-aligned vision into the world.
  • I am being someone who comes from inner knowing, never from a place to get to.
  • I am being health as something fun and playful that connects me to my boys.
  • I am being vulnerable and true to myself through honest sharing.
  • I am being a nurturing conduit, champion and loving witness for the creativity in others.
  • I am being that big never needs to feel big.
  • I am being that life is the ultimate experience, in the good times and the trying ones.
  • I am being that life is only ever showing me the path of initiation as I get stronger in my groundedness.

The work I do, the venue I'm building, the people I sit with: all of it is downstream of who I'm being. None of it is upstream.

I'm still inside the work. I haven't arrived. I never will. That's part of what makes the ground real.

A final word

This document will change. The next time you read it, it might be longer. Or shorter. Or pointed somewhere I can't yet see.

That's the point.

A Grounded Leader isn't a thing you become. It's a way you keep choosing to stand. The document needs to move because the standing keeps deepening.

If you read something here that feels like it was already true for you before you read it, take it. If something doesn't fit, leave it. Either is fine.

I'm writing this as much for myself as for you.

With love,
Max
