Vision Quest
A moment in time reserved for you to meet yourself again.
What it's for
There is a part of you that the noise in your life keeps you from reaching.
Life happens on the ocean's surface. The waves, the wind, the unrelenting onslaught of whatever the elements have in store for you.
It's not until you break the surface and begin to descend to the calm below that you can reconnect with the quiet, sacred place that lives in us all.
It's from this place you can begin to reconnect with your authentic self. The version of you that has been buried, waiting, and quietly calling you to listen.
And then you carry it back in, and you begin to live from that place.
Whatever that means for you.
Is this you
Most people arrive at this standing in the middle of a specific transition.
- You're questioning your next career move.
- You've lost someone close to you.
- You've had a health scare that put you in contact with your own mortality.
- Your children are leaving home and the purpose you carried is turning into something you don't have the words for yet.
- What once held meaning doesn't register any more, and you feel almost nothing for the life you've built.
- Something big wants to emerge and it feels out of reach.
- You have a goal or a purpose you need clarity on.
- Your marriage is at a tipping point and the fork in the road is covered in fog.
- You want to go all in on something that feels too big to carry alone.
- You're facing a decision that means saying goodbye to a version of you that no longer fits but still feels like comfort.
- Your life has been at the service of everyone else's priorities and you're at a breaking point.
- You've lost yourself in building the business, the career or the family, and it's time to slow down and meet yourself again.
The eight days
Four days alone. Two days either side. That's why it's eight and not four.
- Days 1 and 2Together on the land, before anyone goes out. This is teaching and preparation, and it's also the practical part: how the circle works, what you take, what you do if something goes wrong, how you'll be checked on. It's where the group forms, and where you say out loud what you're going out there carrying.
- Days 3 to 6Alone. Four days and four nights in your own circle. Water only, no food. Nobody comes to talk to you. This is the part people mean when they say vision quest.
- Days 7 and 8Together again. You walk back in and you tell what happened, and it gets received by people who were out there too. This is not an afterthought and it is not optional. What you do with what emerges determines whether it takes hold or dissolves.
20 to 27 March 2027. Northern Rivers, New South Wales. The property is secured.
Where this comes from
Steve and I, after I returned from four days out in the bush on my first Quest.
This is a rite of passage and an initiation, not a retreat with a new name on it.
Stalking Wolf was a Lipan Apache elder. He passed his teachings to a man named Tom Brown Jr in the United States, and from there they have travelled the way they have always travelled: from one person who has sat out there to the next. I was trained and initiated in that lineage by Steve McKenzie and Katie Rydge.
What that means in practice is that almost none of this is mine. The eight days, the four alone, the fast, the way the return is held. I didn't design any of it and I'm not free to improve it. My job is to hold it the way it was held for me.
It also means there is no programme here. Nobody is going to teach you anything out in that circle. The land does that part, and it does it differently for every person who sits in it.
What I won't promise
Although I can describe a few ways in which the quest has changed my life, I can never and will never stand here and promise it will do the same thing for you as it has for me.
And that is why it's a calling. A calling steeped in self-responsibility and agency. A soul-level intelligence trying to get your attention.
The only governance here is that which is adhered to from within.
Who holds it
It took me over two years to say yes to my own.
I sat my Quest on my fortieth birthday, in March 2024. I tried once within the first year and it never took. The timing was off and it felt forced.
It was never sold to me. It can't be sold. You can only become ready.
What ready looks like is different for everyone. What I kept doing over those two years was trying to make old ways of being fit the new version of me I was growing into. I worked harder to push through a barrier I thought I had. I tried to work longer, change routines, have different conversations. I was deeply afraid of being left behind by a world that no longer fit me. I had outgrown it, although I wouldn't have used that language at the time, and it may not suit you to use it either.
What matters is that this period in your life, the crossing of this threshold, can't be done using someone else's blueprint.
